Why is it that a nail can stand for many days on the shelf and not rust, but when placed in tap water it dies?
Three things are required for rusting to take place - iron, oxygen and water. If any one of them is taken away, rusting cannot take place. There is enough dissolved oxygen in tap water for the nail to rust. On a shelf, the nail would rust, too, if the air was damp.

You would have probably started showing symptoms of the C. tetani, however since you did not use antiseptic, i wouldn't be surprised if you got some type of infection regardless. This has happened to me too. What I did was put those yellow dish gloves on for the non-slip grip and used a wrench to get the thing to twist off... It worked for me and the nailpolish was totally crudded around the edges too.. The yellow dish gloves really helped for the grip!

Do you have to take a needle if you have an ingrown toe nail and will it hert?
I don't know how docs fix this now but when I was 12 (15 yrs ago) I had an ingrown toenail and they gave me four shots on each side of my toe. It felt like a bee stinging. Then after it was numb they cut out the side of the ingrown toenail.

If a new nail is growing underneath, it's unlikely that anything they do will hurt. They might trim off the infected nail, or they might tell you to wait and let it fall off, because it will come right off. They might also give you some stuff to paint on the toenail to kill the infection.

its most likely because the nail polish needs heat to dry up, and wen u put liquid nail polish on your nails, the evaporation of the liquid stuff (i wanna say water?) causes the cooling effect on your fingers. in other words, the nail polish uses up the heat from your skin to dry up ;)

Did the whole nail come off or just part of it? If the whole thing came off, make sure that the pup doesnt go outside for awhile and soak it in some epsom salt. If just part of it broke off, clip any remaining parts that are hanging off and put some flour on it if it bleeds. I tried a band-aid then it fell off in an hour. I don't know what to do because I am only 11. I hit it on a doorway on friday night and it's been hurting worse and worse... The redness is something you need to watch as that may be an infection.
You might want to have your parent / guardian help you with caring for the finger in order to make sure it doesn't get infected.
To disinfect it instead of washing it with soap try putting some water in a clean cup and heat it in the microwave for 1 minute on high, remove it with a pot holder so as not to burn yourself and add 1/2 teaspoon salt to the water. Let it cool to just warm and put your finger in the cup for about 5 minutes to clean the finger. It might burn or hurt due to the salt but salt is a natural antibiotic so it's good for you finger.
Next if you have some type of antibiotic ointment like Bactitracin or similar ointment put some on a band-aide or on the fingernail and wrap it around your finger. Now take another band-aide and wrap it from the tip of the finger down around each side of the finger covering the other first band-aide to help keep it on.
If you do not have any ointment, try using something like vaseline to help keep it moist for tonight. Then unwrap it tomorrow and check it for infection and if it has infection then you need to see a doctor for a prescription. If it looks better or about the same repeat the salty water treatment again with new clean water for 5 minutes, add ointment and rewrap the finger.

Wow, not another one :) Seriously, I'm sorry to hear about it. Is it feeling any better? It happened Friday so my main worry right now is infection. As long as you don't see a lot of redness or radiating red lines coming out from around it, it should heal okay. I would say wash it by pouring hydrogen peroxide over it, then gently pat it dry with a clean towel. Smear a thick layer of Neosporin or generic equivalent on it, then wrap it up by putting a band-aid on it. Use another band-aid on the other side to help hold it in place if you have to. Or if you don't have the right kind of band-aids do you have any gauze and bandage tape? You can tape it up that way. I know band-aids don't always stay put on fingertips. It will probably still be very tender for another week or so. I would actually suggest using a thick wrap of gauze and then bandage tape, partly for the padding effect so you can get some use out of that hand. Good luck, I hope it gets better soon. Let me know if you have any problems.

Is it possoble to mix two nail varnish colours.?
i've been trying to get the perfect french manicure (doing it my self) and i have atip whitner thats bright white and one thats ivory. I want to add some of the bright white to the ivory to brigten the colour a little. Anyone done this kind of thing before, whats kind of results am i likely to get. id just put a plaster on it so the shoes isnt touching it, and maybe some thick socks. Usually stuff like that heals pretty quick. Antiseptic cream may be a good idea aswell to soothe and help it heal.

It's reportedly a potent oral antifungal agent that can really do a number on a person's liver. Now tell me: Is it worth damaging your liver to rid yourself of toenail fungus? I think your answer is a resounding ';No!'; It's also very expensive costing upwards of $100/month. There's no doubt that the maker of the stuff is protecting it's patents to it and rigging the price as high as they can get away with. I've had recurring bouts of toenail fungus for several years. I've always beens an avid walker so my feet get sweaty, which fungi love; however, I've had success using ordinary kitchen vinegar. Fungus hates an acidic environment which is essential what gives vinegar its sour taste - acid. So if you use the stuff twice a day dabbing it on the affected toes I can assure you postive results. Unfortunately toenail fungus is difficult to treat because your feet are warm .... The cure is so simple. Take distilled white vinegar and put drops on your toes in a bowl of water.

Probably not. Try tea tree oil, this will kill all fungus. (by comparison, vinegar will kill about 80% of all mold types, and mold is a fungus) I've been using tea tree oil on mine for about three weeks and half the hard encrustation under the toenail is gone; I can dig out a little more each day with the end of a nail file. Now I have a big space under half of my toenail that used to be packed with hard crust from the fungus.
I just put a few drops of tea tree oil under the edge of my toenail and let it soak in; I do this in the morning and again at night. It is having a devastating effect on the toenail fungus.
Fungus grows with water, so diluting vinegar with water (when vinegar is already diluted with water) is putting mainly water on the fungus. If you use pure tea tree oil there is no water at all, and this seems to me to be a much better idea.

(by comparison, vinegar will kill about 80% of all mold types, and mold is a fungus) I've been using tea tree oil on mine for about three weeks and half the hard encrustation under the toenail is gone; I can dig out a little more each day with the end of a nail file. Now I have a big space under half of my toenail that used to be packed with hard crust from the fungus.
I just put a few drops of tea tree oil under the edge of my toenail and let it soak in; I do this in the morning and again at night. It is having a devastating effect on the toenail fungus.
Fungus grows with water, so diluting vinegar with water (when vinegar is already diluted with water) is putting mainly water on the fungus. If you use pure tea tree oil there is no water at all, and this seems to me to be a much better idea.
Just telling you what I know works.

Ugh that's horrible Call your vet ASAP and ask the Worst thing is probally a Infection Since it was a rusty nail it is Most likley hurting your Dog. Put a wet wrong on it to Help it stop hurting then When you take it off if there is any Yellow/ orange liquid it is Infected and the vet will give you some cream. If you can't get to the vet Proxide the Dog will yelp but it needs to be Done So it won't get too infected and if it isnt already it will Prevent it.

He spent about a week at the Vets undergoing so many different kinds of treatment - conventional, homeopathic, etc. Our Vet was terrific and went above and beyond the call of duty to save him. He begged electrolytes from the local hospital, called in a homeopath, etc. His boss told him to put Zulu down as dogs don't survive tetanus but Craig (our Vet) wouldn't because we wouldn't give up on Zulu. Craig would do a 40 minute round trip to the Vet surgery every night to check on Zulu and he didn't charge us for his time, only the drugs he used on Zulu.
We went to visit Zulu one day and I was brushing him when he started convulsing. We all thought he wouldn't make it through the night. That day Craig started acupuncture on Zulu. Next morning the Vet called to tell us that Zulu was still alive and actually walked out to meet him when he arrived at the surgery.
After that Zulu continued to improve and came home. I had to carry him up and down the stairs as the muscles in his legs were all contracted and walking was difficult. serioulsy don't drill holes in ur nail!!!!! What u should do is soak it in cool/cold water and put running alcohol on it ..u know teh clr kind . Those two things really help and eventually the nail will grow out. If you wanted to get technical actually are supposed to have a hole drilled in it..professional of course..it releases the pressure, immediately...you just have to keep it covered and sanitized because open wounds can get infected fairly quickly..If its not too bad I wouldnt bother going through all that...just let it heal on its own...

The podiatrist will numb it very well, believe me. I had part of my toenail cut out and the nail bed killed and I literally felt nothing. And I am a baby about pain, but I sat there and joked with the doctor while it was going on, though I did not watch.
Depends on the severity. No there aren't any creams. If you are diabetic it's best to see a podiatrist. This guy I used to date had an ingrown toenail just on the one side and the Dr. said to put a small piece of cotton under it after showering and leave it there till the next day. It does hurt but only for the first little bit, then eventually it relieved the pain and the toenail grew properly again after a few days.
I had that a few years back. Just go to your doctor. He'll perscribe a cream for you. Use it as directed and it'll take care of it. In the meantime soaking it in hot water and salt will help too. That's what I did and it's completely healed. (The soaking idea also came from the doctor.)

I would definitely go see a doctor. It could get infected, and they will be able to tell. If it is, they can try and do something about it before it gets bad. For now, I'd say take some ibuprofen for the pain, and wash it really good. If you do go to the doctor, maybe take the nail with you. You might need another Tetanus booster, as they recommend patients get vaccinated after stepping on rusty nails and such. Ok, how serious was the wound? If it was only minor and stopped bleeding quickly, then it should be ok, but you must keep it covered with a dressing to prevent it getting infected. At night when you're in bed, take the dressing off and let it get some air. Try and get hold of some anti septic cream, and apply this to the wound.
