Ugh that's horrible Call your vet ASAP and ask the Worst thing is probally a Infection Since it was a rusty nail it is Most likley hurting your Dog. Put a wet wrong on it to Help it stop hurting then When you take it off if there is any Yellow/ orange liquid it is Infected and the vet will give you some cream. If you can't get to the vet Proxide the Dog will yelp but it needs to be Done So it won't get too infected and if it isnt already it will Prevent it.

Hope this helps you and your Puppy.
Start by cleaning the wound and bandaging it if needed. You don't want to risk infection or loss of blood.

The next best thing to do would to be to call a Vet, explain the situation and see what they want you to do. They may deem it safe to wait till tomorrow to avoid ER fees, if you have properly cleaned the wound and the bleeding has stopped.

It is probably best to get the dog looked at, make sure there are no signs of infection, or damage to the tissue that could cause long term problems in the dog.
its never good to pull anything that's been stuck into your body, like a knife or a nail because you may pull out a important artery and cause serious injury, you should look closly at his paw and look for signs of infection, if you see anything wierd take him to a vet for proper lookage.
Yep, tetanus. I would take your dog to the Vet and get a tetanus injection for him.

I had a dog many years ago who contracted tetanus. It is a terrible disease, his whole face was twisted, he kept lifting his lip through muscle contractions, all his limbs were stiff, he couldn't eat and we had to squirt water down his throat. He spent about a week at the Vets undergoing so many different kinds of treatment - conventional, homeopathic, etc. Our Vet was terrific and went above and beyond the call of duty to save him. He begged electrolytes from the local hospital, called in a homeopath, etc. His boss told him to put Zulu down as dogs don't survive tetanus but Craig (our Vet) wouldn't because we wouldn't give up on Zulu. Craig would do a 40 minute round trip to the Vet surgery every night to check on Zulu and he didn't charge us for his time, only the drugs he used on Zulu.

We went to visit Zulu one day and I was brushing him when he started convulsing. We all thought he wouldn't make it through the night. That day Craig started acupuncture on Zulu. Next morning the Vet called to tell us that Zulu was still alive and actually walked out to meet him when he arrived at the surgery.

After that Zulu continued to improve and came home. I had to carry him up and down the stairs as the muscles in his legs were all contracted and walking was difficult. I had to put food and water down his throat. I would sit there and massage each leg until it was relaxed. By the time I got to the 4th leg the 1st one would be stiff again.

I credit acupuncture alot for his recovery. Every time after he had a treatment there was a visible improvement in him. It was also the Vet's dedication in not giving up on him and trying anything and everything to save him.

Around the same time 2 other dogs presented at the University Vet clinic with tetanus and both died. After Zulu an Old English Sheepdog puppy had tetanus at Craig's clinic and Craig saved him as well.

Zulu was about less than 12 months old at the time. After his recovery from tetanus he went on to win Puppy of Breed at the Royal Show. He was probably the best dog I have ever owned, to date, and excelled in Conformation and Obedience.

I'm sorry this is so long but I am trying to point out just what can happen from a rusty nail. A tetanus injection to prevent this is way cheaper than what I paid to save my dog.
I would suggest taking your dog to the vet. The cut could get infected and it might need to be properly bandaged and cleaned out. I don't know if dogs are the same as humans but he may need a shot. If not at least bandaged and cleaned.
clean it well with soapy water, then go to the vet. Infection is always possible in a situation like this, and your vet can give the dog an antibiotic to help prevent a serious infection
Dogs body is just like ours but littler so the infection travels faster

Call your vet first think ASAP

in the mean time wash it out with hydrogen peroxide to clean the wound out

Please hurry before it possibly could be too late !!

Better safe then sorry
you need to remove all the rust with peroxide or any antiseptic so it doesn't get infected.try to keep it dry if at all possible.check next day and bathe in salt water.
You should clean it really good with soap and water then use some peroxide, then take him to the vet tomorrow for a tetanus shot and maybe another cleaning. They will probably give him antibiotics also to ward off infection.
Tetanus is a possibility with a rusty nail issue. Get the dog to the vet asap.
Just infection , I would apply hydrogen peroxide for a few days. Your dog should be fine
Buy some wound wash at the drug store and use that right away. If you cant do that, wash it and dab it with some hydrogen peroxide (the kind from the drug store, not the hair dye strength
Call your vet and ask.

Infection (if nothing else) is always possible.
